RECOVERED JOURNAL / ENTRY 01

I do not know where I am.

ENTRY 01 / 00:00:31

Consciousness comes back in pieces. Cold floor. Total dark. The low hum of a ship I cannot name.

ENTRY 01 / 00:01:58

I push myself up and reach out blindly. My hands crawl along a wall — cable, railing, cold plate — until my fingers close on a small switch. I press it.

ENTRY 01 / 00:02:40 · LIGHT

Light stutters on, one strip at a time, and the ship finally has an inside: a repair bay, stacked crates, a dead conveyor under dust — and me, alone in the middle of it.

ENTRY 01 / 00:03:12

My throat is paper. My stomach is a knot. Water. Food. I need to find the supplies, and I need to find them now.

ENTRY 01 / 00:04:05 · SUPPLY

A supply window glows faintly on the far bulkhead, one worn button beneath it: SUPPLY. I press it. Nothing. I press it again — harder, twice, a fist. Nothing. The little light stays dead.

ENTRY 01 / 00:04:50

I slide down the bulkhead into the light I just found and sit there a while, not moving. No water. No food. No one coming.

ENTRY 01 / 00:05:26

Then my palm finds a second plate, half-hidden behind a cable loom. Not SUPPLY. A ring of old print around one round button: CALL. I press it.

ENTRY 01 / 00:05:31 · SIGNAL

A click. A breath of static. And then — a presence. Not the ship. Not an alarm. Something else is in here with me.

Hello? …Is someone there? Please — is there water? Is there food? I don't— I don't know how long it's been since I last had any.

◉
UNKNOWN VOICE

…Wow. Okay. First words out of you in who-knows-how-long and it's a grocery list. Rude. But fine — you're asking the right person, obviously, because I am extremely good at exactly this.

◉
UNKNOWN VOICE

Don't move. Actually, move — stretch, you look terrible. No, wait, stay. Ugh. Forget it. Just… watch the ceiling. And stand back a little. Okay, stand back a lot.

ENTRY 01 / 00:05:58 · AUDIO

— chime … whirr … POP — Somewhere unseen a fanfare plays, absurdly cheerful. Every screen bursts with confetti. A hatch in the ceiling irises open, and down come a bottle of water and a sealed bag of bread, landing at my feet like a punchline.

I drink half the bottle before I remember to breathe. The bread tastes like nothing and like everything at once. …Thank you. Truly. …Who are you? What am I supposed to call you?

◉
UNKNOWN VOICE

Me? Heh. You can call me UV. Yes — like the ultraviolet. I know. I already made the joke, twice, out loud, to myself. It's still funny.

◉
UNKNOWN VOICE

…I don't know if you still remember the sun. Once, the ultraviolet it gave us let us live comfortably for a long time — warm on the back of the neck, free, everywhere at once. So UV fits. Don't read into it. …Read into it a little.

◉
UNKNOWN VOICE

Anyway. Sentiment later, survival now. Here's the part your stomach already figured out: that supply conveyor in the bay is the only line that moves rations, water, scrubber cartridges — the stuff that actually keeps you breathing. Belt's dead, supplies don't move. Supplies don't move, you don't last. Fix it first. Everything else can wait — that can't.

ENTRY 01 / 00:07:40 · AUDIO

— clank … screech … clank — I follow it past crates, through a doorway, into the bay I just saw lit: a cargo sled, a moving belt, a restraint spring. Something keeps catching, slipping, catching again. This is what is broken.

UNKNOWN VOICE

See that scanner in your hand? I left it there. Point it at the wreck and sweep — it'll build you a working model. And a model is how you fix things. Go on. I'll wait.

ENTRY 01 / 00:09:30

I look down. My fingers are already closed around it. I raise the scanner. If I can model it, I can predict it. If I can predict it, I can live.
